Brian Heald, organist at the Wesley Methodist Church in Chester, is to receive the British Empire Medal. The BEM is awarded for “hands-on service to the community”, which is particularly appropriate in this case. Brian has been an organist at the church for fifty years and is organiser of its Music at Wesley programme, responsible for popular concerts and recitals for many years. Brian is being awarded for his services to music and the community at Chester.

The award comes at a time when the concerts regularly attract audiences of over 120, coming from all over Cheshire and North Wales. They are treated to a varied programme, mainly of piano and instrumental music spanning the centuries, with an emphasis on promoting younger musicians, especially through the collaboration with Chetham’s School of Music whose students come regularly to share their talents with appreciative audiences.
The church is also preparing to mark the centenary of its fully restored Binns organ, installed in the summer of 1926, with a recital by Cathedral Director of Music, Philip Rushforth, in a programme reflecting that opening concert, including Widor’s Fifth Symphony No. 5 in F and its virtuoso Toccata and Fugue. This will be held on Saturday 11July at 2.00 pm at Wesley Church, Chester, followed by tea and cake.
Brian’s long service will be marked by the church the following day, giving thanks for his outstanding service and dedication to the provision of excellent music at this central city church.
