Hustings for local elections

05 May 2026

Like many local churches, Roker Methodist and URC Church in Sunderland, with the support of the local Church of England, held a hustings event ahead of their local elections.

Elections are being held for the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Senedd and parts of English local government on Thursday 7 May 2026.

All five parties standing in the ward were represented, in a relaxed and respectful event chaired independently by the calm Lucy Cooke who allowed an hour of questions from a room full of people (more chairs had to be brought in).

From the local glass centre, to parks and coast, HMOs to potholes, SEND needs to care of an aging population, those present set out their stalls and from a church's perspective they met new young candidates who may represent the ward and city for years to come.

Political representatives in the sunshine together after the event, and in the Methodist hall during the proceedings.

The Revd John Purdy, minister at Roker Methodist Church commented, "We are open to share God's love with those around us" as its strapline, and engaging with the local election candidates, and enabling user groups and the local community to meet them, for us opens up new possibilities for God's love to be present in the hearts and minds of those who will provide community leadership in the years ahead.
