Rubie Le Masurier

14 January 2025

Rubie Le Masurier, aged 14, who attends St. Helier Methodist Centre, Jersey, was one of the finalists for the 2024 Young Chorister of the Year. The competition was broadcast in December as a Songs of Praise special.

Rubie was mentored for the competition by the singer and presenter Aled Jones and in the final sang “What Child is This”, a Christmas carol with lyrics by William Chatterton Dix in 1865.

“Taking part was an unforgettable experience for me and I’m very grateful for every minute of it,” says Rubie. “I met so many incredible people and choristers who were all like-minded and supportive.”

For Rubie, her faith and her singing have become closely connected, “When I was little, I did not really understand the concept of God. But that changed as I got older and realised that God is everywhere, in everything I do, and now singing a hymn or a carol is a key part of my praise!”

Her singing began when she entered a talent show on holiday and sang her favourite song from the film Barbie. “My dad was so impressed that when we came home to Jersey he phoned up the best singing teacher in the island, Imogen Nicholls, and the rest is history,” says Rubie.

The competition was eventually won by Sharon from Horley who sang “The Time of Snow”. Rubie has plans to continue to pursue her music career. “I will always continue singing no matter the fall or success. Singing is part of my life, and I could never give it up. I will be competing in the Llangollen International Eistedfodd for the second time as a soloist and a choir member. I hope to compete in the Young Chorister competition again in two years when I’ll be 16.”
