Home for a retired minister or spouse in Guernsey
The Bailiwick of Guernsey Circuit has a house that was bequeathed in a will with the intention being to provide a home for a retired minister or spouse with the right qualifications to live in a Guernsey Local Market house. Anyone who would potentially be interested in living in this house would be required to meet specific criteria, in order to meet the terms of the will and Guernsey Housing Law. The will requires the person to be a retired minister who is of Guernsey origin, or a spouse of a retired minister of Guernsey origin, or who has served in the Methodist ministry in Guernsey or any other retired Methodist Minister. The property is in Guernsey, Channel Isles, and local Housing Law means it can only be occupied by a person with Guernsey Local Market housing eligibility.
The States of Guernsey website says:
Local Market is one of the two 'Housing Markets' in Guernsey. There are restrictions on who can live in these properties. Anyone who is residentially qualified, holds an Employment Permit or an Immediate Family Member of a Local Market Householder can live in Local Market (immediate family members who have lived in Open Market before are not guaranteed to be granted a Permit to live in Local Market and should contact the Population Management Office for guidance). Time spent in this Market is generally counted towards a Residential Qualification.
Should anybody wish to check whether they are residentially qualified they could contact Population Management:
The team at the Population Management Office can be contacted by phone on +44(0)1481 225790 (Monday to Friday, 9am - 3pm) or by email at population@gov.gg.
A rental charge would be made for the property in order to provide for its upkeep.
If anybody is interested in living in the house, and meets the eligibility criteria, please could they get in touch with Esther Male (Custodian Trustee) male@cwgsy.net and Maggie Lewis (secretary to the Custodian Trustees) sageowls@cwgsy.net in the first instance, and by 13 April 2026 at the latest. If anyone who is currently working but would otherwise meet the criteria, and would be interested in living in the house once retired, please also get in touch with an anticipated date of retirement.
