"When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come." (v. 13)

John 16:12-15 Sunday 15 June 2025

Psalm 8

Background
As a parent and a teacher, I think I have got a bit better at knowing when to speak and when to stay silent. My family and the students I have taught over the years may disagree! Sometimes saying something, even when I feel it’s the right thing to say, is just not going to be received, understood or accepted. Sometimes those we love need to go their own way to learn and grow in understanding. While students may find it frustrating when a teacher withholds information, ideas or knowledge it allows them to grow through enquiry and analysis.

In the chapters preceding John 16 and also in chapter 17 Jesus demonstrates what a wonderful teacher he is, showing understanding of what his disciples can take on board and what he needs to leave to the Holy Spirit of truth to impart to them.

In verses 13-15 Jesus speaks of his relationship with God the Father and the Holy Spirit and their relationship with us. To me these verses speak of mutuality, balance, giving and receiving – a mysterious and beautiful relationship that is reflected in the natural world and in happy human relationships. Jesus is speaking here of what has come to be known as 'the Trinity'.

To Ponder:

  • How do you use words and silence in relationships and in your relationship with God? Are there ways you might use them differently?
  • When do you receive the Holy Spirit who gives precious gifts from Jesus and God?

Prayer
Lord Jesus thank you for sharing all the truth God the Father gives you, through the Holy Spirit you give to us. Help us to use words wisely and to listen carefully. Amen.
