“It has been a very great joy to visit Gibraltar, to meet people and celebrate its diversity, and to be present as new members of the Methodist Church in Gibraltar were confirmed and received into membership.”

There has been a constant Methodist presence on The Rock, since 1769 and the significant contribution of Sergeant Major Henry Ince, who was a lay Methodist Preacher.

Gibraltar is a part of the South East District of the Methodist Church in Britain and the President was accompanied on her visit by the Chair of the District, the Revd Dr. David Hinchliffe.

During their visit, the President had very productive conversations with HE The Governor, Lieutenant General Sir Ben Bathurst at The Convent; with Leaders of the Roman Catholic and Anglican Communities and the Chaplain to HM Forces Gibraltar at the Cathedral of St. Mary The Crowned; and with Imam Abdul, who welcomed them to the Mosque, and Chief Rabbi Hassid, who welcomed them to the Synagogue on Bomb House Lane.

As a recent past President of the British Council of Christians and Jews, the President of the Methodist Conference made time for reflection at the Jew’s Gate Cemetery, before visiting St. Michael’s Cave and then the Siege Tunnels, to see the defensive work suggested and overseen by the Methodist Preacher Henry Ince.

On Sunday, the Methodist Church Community, which is temporarily holding services in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, was permitted to use the King’s Chapel for a special service of Confirmation, led by the President.
