In need of focus

Life is full of choices and things to do. How do we prioritise what we do first?

Is it even possible when everything looks so good and needs to be done! Where do we start, How do we start?!

What if I have the drive and a task at hand, but get so absorbed in it I neglect to look after myself?

How can I find my focus?

We all have tasks and opportunities that present themselves to us each day. Some might be mundane, but need to happen. Others might be mentally difficult, and come with an emotional tax to complete them. Then there are those that excite and inspire us and we want to jump straight in!

This might leave us in a state of indecision at the decisions we need to make, or in a place of shutting down and not doing anything.

In 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven offered this advice to a class to students graduating from the University of Texas:

“If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task and another and another. By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed.

And, if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that is made — that you made — and a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better.”

Checklist

What are the tasks you need to do today? Where do you need to focus? Take a few moments to write down what you need to do (This could be anything from brushing your teeth, cooking food, sending an email). Then pick one of those tasks to complete. When you do: remove it from the list. Look back at the list at the end of the day and see how much shorter it is.


Here is a simple prayer. Say it with me

I do not know which way to go, which task to complete.

Sit with me God in the fog of indecision.

Then, guide me gently onto the needed path.

As I remember, I am not alone.

Amen

Take time out

Sometimes Jesus would withdraw from others to make time to sit, pray, reflect, and discern what he was to do. Helping him come to decisions that were right in that moment; then acted.

For the next five minutes, listen to this meditation on just that:


A creative way to look at the things to focus on today could be writing down on your hand what you are to do:

God of the creative, the organiser and the procrastinator;

Hear our prayer, as we seek focus for our lives.

Whether in our studies, work or personal life;

Help us overcome our distractions or uncertainties.

Bless us with peace of mind.

Give us a moment of clarity and affirmation.

That we might know what to choose.

What to set down and what to pick up.

Give us the guidance we need to achieve our goals.

Whilst also serving others.

Amen
