Celebrating 190 Years of Methodist Witness in Argentina

The Iglesia Evangélica Metodista Argentina (IEMA) recently gathered in Buenos Aires for its XXIX General Assembly, celebrating 190 years of Methodist witness in Argentina and electing Mariel Pons as bishop. Representing the Methodist Church in Britain, Ruth Briddock joined church leaders, representatives and ecumenical partners from across the region as they reflected on the life, mission and future of the church. 

The Assembly highlighted a church that is deeply rooted in its history while looking confidently to the future. Participants celebrated the growing visibility of women in leadership, investment in theological education through the ecumenical Faculty of Religious Studies at UCEL, the ongoing contribution of Methodist schools, and plans for a youth orchestra that will serve the wider community. Alongside these signs of hope, the church also reaffirmed its commitment to justice and human rights, reflecting on the 50th anniversary of Argentina's military dictatorship and the role Methodists have played in speaking truth to power.

Like the Methodist Church in Britain, IEMA is facing challenges including declining membership, ageing buildings and pressure on financial resources. Yet Ruth's reflections highlight a church seeking to remain faithful to its calling, captured in its motto: "Spirit, unite your church, send us out in mission." She observed a readiness to look outward, be bold and innovative, cooperate with others, and work ecumenically - a compelling witness to the worldwide Methodist family.
