Forthcoming Elections
Elections to the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Senedd and parts of English local government will take place on Thursday 7 May 2026. Every election presents an opportunity for individuals and churches to participate critically and constructively in the democratic process, and we encourage everyone to ‘love, pray and vote’.
However, the 2026 elections are taking place in an increasingly polarised and febrile political atmosphere. Religion, including Christianity, is being drawn into political campaigns more than in previous years. Ministers should be aware of the possibility of political candidates or parties in their areas seeking to reference or claim the support of the church in their campaign or campaign material, or during a hustings event.
General guidance and support are available at jpit.uk/elections including:
- A guide to holding an election hustings event
- Registering to vote and Voter ID
- Resources about engaging with politics in an age of disinformation and polarisation
- Advice on churches and election regulations
