Bible Book:
Luke

] you will conceive in our womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever.” (vv. 31-33)

Luke 1:26-38 Tuesday 25 March 2014

Background

In this passage Luke's Gospel gives us three answers to theidentity of Jesus or who Jesus is:

  • Jesus is Saviour: the child to be born will be named Jesus (Godsaves or the Lord saves)
  • Jesus is the Son of God: he will be called "Son of the MostHigh"
  • Jesus is king: the throne of his ancestor David will be givento him.

Jesus fulfils many Old Testament prophecies made hundreds ofyears before his birth. This makes his birth the most importantbirth in human history. In fact, his birth divides world historyinto two parts: BC and AD (Before and at the time of our Lord).Jesus is God-man (Immanuel - God with us). In him God's love, God'swisdom and God's power became manifest. This Jesus is theembodiment of God's grace. The apostle Paul says, "for you know thegenerous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yetfor your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you mightbecome rich" (2 Corinthians 8:9).
