The hymns above pick up the theme of ‘unexpected turnouts’. The King arrives in an unexpected manner; God treats us far better than we deserve; our behaviour is the very thing we hate; Jesus does not do the expected thing. The Revd Dr Henry McKeating ( Companion to the Revised Lectionary vol.6 (2001: Epworth) p129ff) suggests a different approach: 1 .Jesus is both comforting and challenging, and 2. next week’s lectionary readings provide the answers to the issues raised in the passages above.
