Now concerning virgins, I have no command of the Lord, but I give my opinion as one who by the Lord’s mercy is trustworthy. I think that, in view of the impending crisis, it is well for you to remain as you are. (vs 25-26)

1 Corinthians 7:25-31 Monday 12 May 2025

Psalm 127

Background
We remind ourselves that in this whole discourse Paul speaks from his own opinion (v. 25 see also 7:12, 40). This should not make us dismiss his words, however, as Paul senses that he speaks of God’s will too (as I hope I do in my opinions and in writing my piece).

As we read, we remind ourselves that Paul is writing in response to concerns of people in Corinth "now concerning…" (v. 25). Here Paul deals with the issue presented to him and reading on to the end of the chapter he develops that position. In this portion, he traverses between the law “It is not good that the man should be alone” (Genesis 2:18) and unbounded freedom, and all this in view of 'the impending crisis' (v. 26). The 'crisis' he identifies is that of the end times (v. 31) (see also Luke 21:20-24).

For Paul, this time is soon – in fact the destruction of Jerusalem came about some 15 years after the writing of this letter. And like Paul, we live our lives and develop our relationships in that context. His opinion too is that, as this will be such a terrible time, it's better to have this as our sole concern.

Which draws me then to consider the principles that he is teaching us. I believe above all here is a call for our focus, our attention to be on heavenly things. We are called to live our lives and treat those with whom we live our lives from that perspective.

To Ponder:

  • How do you give your opinion and how do you seek to keep your outlook in line with God’s will and God’s way?
  • How are you living in terms of the impending crisis? Do you view your relationships from a faith perspective or vice versa?

Prayer
Lord God, as we live our lives and as the great day draws near, help us to live and serve as people concerned for your coming kingdom. May we hold in our relationships the truth of your return. Amen.
