Psalm 26:1-8

Background
Matthew's Gospel is often thought to be split into three sections. The first focuses on the presentation of Jesus the Messiah, the second is an account of his public ministry, and the final section is about his passion and death.

This passage marks a major turning point toward the final theme when Jesus tells his disciples something they don’t expect: he is going to suffer, be killed and rise again. Peter struggles to accept this and rebukes Jesus for his prophetic words and mission, to which Jesus sharply responds that Peter is failing to think beyond a human viewpoint and as such cannot see God’s divine plan.

Then Jesus turns to all his disciples and says, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me." (v. 24) Here he is explaining that saving our lives in this world at the expense of faith leads to spiritual loss, while losing our lives for Christ leads to true freedom.

Following Jesus means more than believing in him. It means allowing him to reshape the way we live. Sometimes that means letting go of our own plans, pride, comfort, or desire for control and Jesus reminds us that gaining everything the world offers is worthless if we lose our souls in the process.

The way of Jesus may involve sacrifice, but it is also the way to true life. We don't lose ourselves by following him; we discover who we were created to be. The narrative of a world which tells us to choose comfort and success over following Jesus can be persuasive, and so we must exercise our faith with intentionality to find true fulfilment.

• What does 'taking up your cross' look like in your life right now?
• Is there something you are holding onto that Jesus may be asking you to surrender?
• What does Jesus’ promise of finding true life mean to you?

Prayer
Jesus, help us to follow you even when the path is difficult. Give us the courage to surrender what we need to surrender, to trust your plans above our own, and to remember that true life is found in you. Amen.
