In the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and indulging their own lusts and saying, "Where is the promise of his coming?" (vs 3-4)
Background
We are now in chapter 3. Peter wanted to stir up listeners' minds, so that they would remain strong in their faith against opposition. He reinforced the point that he made in the last two readings from chapter 1, that is, that the people should remember the words of the prophets. He also said that they should remember the commandment of Jesus, made through the words of the apostles. He found it important to stress this, that the apostles are – that he is – speaking the commands of Jesus.
Referring to their faith in the second coming of Jesus, Peter said that "First of all you must understand this…" (verse 3) that in the last days there will be those who scoff and mock their faith. They will say, "Where is the promise of his coming?" (verse 4). They will say that people die, and the world continues and nothing changes. To counter this, Peter points out that the earth has not stayed the same forever. They will ignore the fact that the word of God created the heavens and the earth (verses 5-6, and see John 1:1-5). He referred to the story of the flood as a lesson that God will not let sin go unpunished (Genesis 7: 11-24).
Peter then contrasted the flood with a future judgement by fire. Why do the scoffers ignore this fact? Because they want to carry on with their sinful desires and want to live in sin without any consequences (verses 3 and 4).

- Are you ever ridiculed because of your faith? How do you stand up to it, what gives you strength? Are there any passages in the Bible that help you?
- The nature of the Creator God is much bigger than our human minds can understand. What fascinates you about God’s creativity?
- What are your thoughts on the future judgement of sinful and godless people? How can you ensure that you lead a life that is pleasing to God?
Prayer
Almighty God, we thank you for your kindness and compassion towards us. We offer you our prayers of confession and ask for your forgiveness. Help us to lead a life that is pleasing to you. Amen.
