Bible Book:
Exodus

Then Moses said, "I must turn aside and look at this great sight, and see why the bush is not burned up." When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, "Moses, Moses!" And he said, "Here I am." (vs 3-4)

Psalm 29

Background
It’s interesting how our story starts today. Moses shepherds his flock into and beyond the wilderness to Horeb. There is something significant about a shepherd undertaking such a journey with his sheep – but it seems Moses was not compelled to – I guess he undertook it to find lush pasture on the mountain slopes. When he arrived at the mountain of God he encountered an angel and then the Lord. It’s clear from Moses' reaction that he knew how to act. He listened to God and his plan (see 1 Samuel 3 for a similar response).

In speaking about the plight of his people in Egypt, God calls Moses and the passage records his response, “Who am I that I should go?” (v. 11) God assures Moses that he will be with him (v. 12) and follows with further instruction. It’s interesting to note that uniquely here the sign (that he will serve God on the mountain) comes after the act and not before (see chapter 19).

The messages are clear, God knows the people's suffering, and has a plan. Moses is someone who through his past experiences is suited to help with the plan. I wonder how often in our calling we are invited by God to return from where we came to bring about his mission?

To Ponder:

  • How have you encountered God or 'thin' holy places where God seems particularly apparent? What was the purpose of that encounter?
  • How is God challenging and equipping you today and how do you respond?

Prayer
God, thank you that we can encounter you today in holy places and in unexpected ways. Remind us of our calling and in that challenge may we know your presence, your equipping us to do your work, and your gracious promise. Through Christ our saviour, Amen.
