Bible Book:
Hebrews

Purify our conscience from dead works to worship the living God! (v. 14b)

Hebrews 9:1-3, 11-14 Tuesday 20 October 2026

Psalm 149:1-5

Background
Our approach to a passage of Scripture makes radical differences in how we think it applies to our lives. Sadly, it seems a common approach is to look for our current choices to be affirmed in Scripture passages, so we can justify our choices and feel superior to others. In that light we can see how this passage has been used by Christians to build a belief that our religion is superior to Judaism. We can interpret it as being negative to the practices of Judaism, while ignoring the reality that modern practices of Judaism are significantly different to how they were when this passage was written. The practices of Christianity have also changed over the centuries: for example, we no longer burn witches or use the rack to torture people. We would be offended if people attacked our faith today based on the practices of the past.

Instead I suggest we approach this text looking first for insights and challenges to our own practices and beliefs. The passage ends with the affirmation that it is through the work of Christ that our conscience is purified, allowing us to move from dead works to worshipping the living God. It is generally a lot easier to seen what practices from the past or which are done by others can be considered 'dead works' than it is to see which of ours should be re-evaluated. That might remind of us of Jesus telling us to address the log in our eye before challenging others (Matthew 7:3-5).

There are plenty of areas in contemporary society where Christians are not united in practice and belief (eg over use of war or responses to climate change). These should be fertile ground for reflection and self challenge to avoid hypocrisy. Even if we restrict ourselves to the practices of our faith we might consider how our churches are divided over what might be considered 'dead works' in church rites and structures.

To Ponder:

  • What helps you notice where your life might involve 'dead works'?
  • Which areas of our Christian life today might be hindering our worship of the living God?
