- Bible Book:
- John
"When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come." (v. 13)
Background
In the preceding verses (5-14) we hear something of the work of the Holy Spirit as the one who will convince the world of sin and judgement. In our passage for today Jesus speaks about the work of the Holy Spirit – here called the Spirit of truth. The truth here is the same as in all the gospels: ie that the Son (Jesus) is the sole revelation of the Father (God) and that his words are the same. It means that for us the words and work of the Holy Spirit is the same and that which the Spirit declares today is in accordance with the words of Jesus (v. 13).
It is the truth that will not only set us free (John 8:31-32) but will also lead us to God. Note that the Spirit will guide us (v. 13). This is not a full download, but a continuing revelation as we are able to cope with it.
We hear from Jesus that the Holy Spirit will have a 'discipling presence' among the apostles – ie that it will help them live out their faith – as the Holy Spirit still has today.
To Ponder:
- What is it to know that God’s revelation in you is not yet complete – that there is more for you to know?
- Seek to spend some time in prayer today, reflecting on what God is revealing to you through the Holy Spirit. Seek that truth and ponder it until its purpose is known to you – and then talk about it with someone you trust.
Prayer
Lord, I am grateful that you have more for me to know and experience. I pray today for more of your Holy Spirit, bringing fresh truth to my life and church fellowship. To the glory of your name. Amen.
