"You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.” (v. 6)

Hebrews 5:1-10 Tuesday 13 October 2026

Psalm 143:1-8

Background
We noted yesterday that the author of Hebrews was making a vitally important point when he introduced the concept of Jesus as high priest. Jesus is the only one who can make effective intercession for us in God’s presence. Furthermore, because he has lived a human life among us Jesus understands our weakness and greets us in mercy.

However there was a problem. During the time of Jesus the priesthood was generally seen as reserved for the descendants of Aaron within the tribe of Levi. Jesus was understood to be a descendant of David within the tribe of Judah, and therefore he did not belong to Aaron’s priestly order. Our author responds to this concern by affirming that Jesus belongs as priest to a much older – and therefore superior – order, the order of Melchizedek.

We learn very little about Melchizedek from the Hebrew Scriptures. In Genesis 14:17-20 we read that he was king of Salem (which was to become Jerusalem) and that he was a priest of God most high. He met Abram, fed him and blessed him. In response Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything. Melchizedek is therefore understood to be superior to Abram, and thus to Abram’s descendants, including the Levites and Aaron.

Today’s passage then quotes our only other reference to Melchizedek, which is found in Psalm 110. It sings of God’s affirmation of the king and combines royalty with priesthood. This Psalm is uniquely fulfilled by Jesus. As an obedient son he fulfilled God’s purposes even though it meant death by crucifixion. He now pleads for us in God’s presence.

To Ponder:

  • In verse 5 the author stresses the point that Jesus did not put himself forward but rather was called by God. How can we stay alert to God’s call?
  • Verse 7 affirms that Jesus offered up prayers to God with loud cries and tears. What helps us to appreciate better the cost to Jesus of obedience to God?

Prayer
“Let me hear of your steadfast love in the morning for in you I put my trust. Teach me the way I should go for to you I lift up my soul.” (Psalm 143:8)
