- Bible Book:
- Hebrews
For God is not unjust; he will not overlook your work and the love that you showed for his sake in serving the saints, as you still do. (v. 10)
Background
As Christians we are part of a worldwide community of faith which has existed for 2000 years and is built on foundations that go back much further again. It’s easy, therefore, to forget how fragile the early Christian communities were. In particular the group of Jewish Christians, to which the letter of Hebrews is addressed, were under constant pressure to defend their decision to follow Jesus as Messiah. Christian commitment was, for them, a radical step. What if they had got it wrong?
The letter to Hebrews was written to encourage them to stay faithful and not give up. It uses words both of warm encouragement and dire warning in doing so. The verses in chapter 6 which precede today’s passage use particularly strong words to warn of the consequences of turning away from the faith which once was held.
Today’s passage moves from warning to encouragement. Our author recognises that the fledgling Christian community to which he writes has given clear evidence of Christian virtue in their love and generosity. God knows that this is true and will act accordingly. However the secret of a fulfilling Christian life is not to be found simply in starting well. We need Christian stamina to keep going.
To Ponder:
- What has helped you to keep going when the path of Christian discipleship has been difficult?
- Are there times when you need to be reminded that God is not unjust?
Prayer
Thank you, loving God, that you know me through and through, that you look on me with mercy and that you will keep me to the end. Help me to trust you and stay to faithful. Amen.
