Psalm 119:113–128

Background
In the previous Bible passage Peter reminded the followers of the special qualities a Christian should have, in preparation for any opposition that they will face (verses 12-15). The people are already established in the truth about Jesus, and in this passage, he reminds them that he has been with Jesus, he is an eyewitness to all that they have heard and been taught; these accounts were not ‘cleverly devised myths’ (verse 16).

The voice that Peter refers to (verse 17) is the voice of God which was heard at Jesus’ baptism (Matthew 3:16-17) and again during Jesus’ transfiguration (when his appearance was changed, filled with light) (Matthew 17:5) at which Peter was present.

Peter was with James and John – they were Jesus’ closest circle of the disciples. The words that were said “This is my Son, the Beloved, with him I am well pleased…” reveal Jesus as the Son of God. At his baptism the presence of the Holy Spirit came upon him (as a dove) and he was sent into his ministry (Matthew 3:13-17). At his transfiguration on the mountain top, Jesus’ divinity (his holy and godly nature) and his glory was revealed for just a moment to Peter, James and John (Matthew 17:1-8). Peter heard this voice and saw what happened and can verify as one of Jesus’ followers. He can verify that these accounts were no myth, as he was there and this is the truth about Jesus and he can never forget what he saw and heard.

To Ponder:

• Can you think of a time when you had to defend the truth about something when you were an eyewitness to the event? How did you feel about it? How do you think Peter felt in this situation?
• I wonder how the people felt when they heard the accounts about Jesus from the eyewitnesses themselves? Imagine that you are one of them and reflect upon it.
• With the developing use of AI and social media, how do we tell the false from the truth?

Prayer
Holy God, as we reflect on Peter’s account of his experience with you on the holy mountain, may you reveal yourself to us through the study of these passages. Enable us to come into a deeper understanding of you and deepen our relationship with you. Amen.
