Bible Book:
John

"And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God." (v. 34)

John 1:29-34 Tuesday 16 June 2026

Psalm 53

Background
One of the underlying themes of John's Gospel is the concept of light overcoming darkness and sight overcoming blindness. There are more than 70 references in the Gospel to seeing and the testimony of eye witnesses. Our Bible passage for today is one of the earliest.

John the Baptist is the preacher of repentance and baptism into God’s new life (John 1: 24-28) and he breaks off from his task when he sees Jesus approaching to point him out as the one, the Messiah.

There are two types of 'seeing' here. There is the physical recognition that everything John has been preaching about is now in front of the crowd: "here is the Lamb of God" (v. 29). There is also a testimony of a vision: the Holy Spirit descending from heaven to mark out Jesus as God’s chosen. (vs 31-33)

For John it is a double confirmation. He has come with God’s authority to preach and baptise as a herald. He recognises God’s next move, made physical in Jesus, who stands among them. His message is now: "And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God." (v. 34)

Just before the verses we are looking at today, John has told sceptical Jewish religious leaders that he was not worthy to undo the sandals of the one who would come as God’s ultimate presence among them (the Messiah). (1:27).

I recall leading a praise evening where, as part of the response to what was preached, we invited people to put their shoes underneath the cross as a sign of commitment. It was deeply moving to see trainers, boots, Sunday best shoes and flip flops all together, but even more moving to recognise some of them later as people put them on and left.

It was as if the shoes became a symbol of something greater: the people moving out into the next day’s experience aware that they had encountered a holy moment and needed to share what they had seen.

To Ponder:

  • What experiences have helped you see the presence of Christ in your community?
  • What is your testimony of a moment of heavenly clarity?

Prayer
God of vision, help us tune our spiritual sight to your story of hope. Amen.
