Bible Book:
Romans

"Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are." (vv. 14-16)

Romans 12:5-16 Tuesday 26 April 2016

Psalm: Psalm 78:1-7

Background

There is something in these words that makes me think of waterflowing over the earth...

Water that runs over rocks and always finds a path, flowing aroundobstacles. Water that always finds the lowest way, filling thecrevices and holes of the low places before flowing on. Withoutchanging its elemental simplicity, it shapes itself around thereality that it meets. It is led inexorably onwards by thegoverning force of gravity.

Like water we can flow, both spontaneous and in touch with realityand the 'low places'. As we flow, we flow in compassion for the joyor sorrow in other people we meet. We can overcome the obstacles ofpersecution and hurt by the flow of forgiveness.

Led onwards by the governing force of God's will, as water joins inharmony with water as it journeys on, so we can join with others inlove.

And as water always (eventually) reaches its ultimate destinationin the oceans, so we will reach the infinite ocean of God's eternallove.

To Ponder

  • What stops you from flowing?
  • Consider your life asa journey of water. What times were thetranquil pools and where were the ranging torrents? Where do youdiscern God in this?
