Hope in God's Future

Calling for deep theological engagement with the climate and environmental crises

Hope in God’s Future is an ecumenical report coordinated by the Joint Public Issues Team (JPIT).It considers how we can be disciples of Jesus in the face of today’s climate emergency as part of the Methodist Church striving for net zero by 2030. It guides us and calls us to action, drawing on biblical, theological and scientific examples.

What is the history of Hope in God’s Future?
  • Hope in God’s Future was first discussed at the 2009 Methodist Conference, before a two-year, Connexion-wide consultation was undertaken.
  • Following the consultation, the main body of the report was adopted as a Conference Statement in 2011. This means it became a Statement of the judgement of the Conference – Statements are made on major issues or faith and practice, and reflect a long-term commitment.
  • Since then, with ongoing revision, Hope in God’s Future helps us to engage with the climate and environmental crises.
Why was Hope in God’s future revised?

With the adoption of the Action for Hope Faith Plan in 2022, the Conference agreed to review and update Hope in God’s Future. This report is the result of that revision, presented to the 2025 Conference.

The working group identified some major strands needing revision:

  • Emerging theological insights and awareness of the intersections between colonialism and climate change, the greater impact globally on people who are poor and marginalised, and a greater range of theological voices.
  • Updating those sections relating to the scientific understanding of climate change.
  • Aligning the text with the environmental commitments of the Church, including the aspirational target of net zero by 2030.
A new Statement for 2027

While it has been possible to address some of the necessary revisions in this version of Hope in God’s Future, a new Statement will be put before the 2027 Conference. This new Statement will reflect in full the present realities and guide the Church in the years ahead.
