Bible Book:
John

"I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you." (v. 18)

John 14:15-21 Sunday 10 May 2026

Psalm 66

Background
Today’s passage forms part of the so-called ‘farewell discourses’ in John’s Gospel (chapters 13–17), spoken on the night before Jesus’ crucifixion. These chapters are unique to John's Gospel and record Jesus preparing his disciples for life without him.

In these verses, Jesus promises the coming of another 'Advocate' (v. 16). The original Greek word parakletos is difficult to translate and may be rendered as ‘helper’, ‘comforter’ or ‘counsellor’. It suggests someone who stands alongside another, offering support and guidance. For John’s first readers, who were likely facing uncertainty and opposition, this assurance would have been vital.

There is also a strong sense of presence despite absence. Jesus speaks of coming to his followers (v. 18) and of mutual indwelling: “I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you” (v. 20). This language points beyond the immediate moment to the ongoing life of the Church, shaped by the presence of the Holy Spirit.

The passage additionally emphasises the close relationship between love and obedience for Jesus and his followers. Christ states that those who love him will, “keep my commandments” (v. 15). This is not presented as a legalistic demand but as a natural expression of an intimate relationship. Love and action are inseparable.

As the Church marks Christian Aid Week, and prepares to celebrate Pentecost, the passage encourages readers to reflect on where they see the work of Jesus Christ continuing today.

To Ponder:

  • How might the first hearers of this passage, the apostles, have understood Jesus’ words?
  • Where might God’s people need an ‘advocate’ today?
  • What is the connection between loving God and being obedient to God?

Prayer
Loving God, in Christ you promised never to desert your people; help us to know and feel the power of your Holy Spirit and to be obedient to your will this day; in the power of the Holy Trinity. Amen.
