Bible Book:
John

Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified. (v. 39)

John 7:37-39 Thursday 28 May 2026

Psalm 146

Background
This passage is one of the alternate readings for Pentecost Sunday. The festival or feast mentioned in verse 37 is that of Booths or Tabernacles – a harvest festival rooted in the memory of Israel’s wanderings in the wilderness. Part of the festival recreates the nomadic experience of the desert. There is a ritual of daily libation of water which is brought to the Temple from the Pool of Siloam.

It is against that backdrop that Jesus speaks of the gift of 'living water'. There are three observations which can be made about what Jesus says in these few verses. Firstly, Jesus promises something new, transformative and abundant. Secondly, it's the fulfilment of what was long promised in the Scriptures and confirms God’s faithfulness. Thirdly, when he talks about these ‘rivers of living water’, he means the Holy Spirit does not operate independently but is intimately intertwined with Jesus himself.

Lastly, there is a future promise – the Holy Spirit will come. It was not yet available because Jesus was not yet glorified – he had not gone through death, resurrection and ascension to return to God the Father.

All this was being said in the midst of deep controversy with the chief priests and the Pharisees, who were already plotting to have Jesus arrested. John leaves no doubt that Jesus’ words are of momentous significance, even a matter of life and death.

To Ponder:

  • In this passage water is used as an image for the Holy Spirit whereas in Acts 2 the symbols of wind and fire are used. Which image is most powerful and illuminating for you?
  • ‘Rivers of living water’ speak of the abundance of the gift of the Holy Spirit, which Jesus longs to give to his people. Do you think our churches display evidence of this abundance and overflowing nature of the Spirit in their life and work?

Prayer
Almighty Heavenly God, we give thanks for the gift of your Spirit poured out so abundantly on those who believe and trust in you. Grant us this gift we pray, so that your work may be seen in us so that the world may believe. Amen.
