Words from John Wesley

Lord Jesus ... I have nowhere else to go. I will not stir from thy door; on thee I will trust, and rest, and venture myself; God hath laid my help on thee, and on thee I lay my hope for pardon, for life, for salvation: if I perish, I perish on thy shoulders; if I sink, I sink in thy vessel; if I die, I die at thy door, for I will not go.

From Directions for Renewing our Covenant with God, 178

Words from Scripture

“But now thus says the Lord he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.”

Isaiah 43:1

Hymn

O Lord we are always in your presence, Singing the Faith 33

As we begin

To consider alone

  • How has the knowledge that God says to you “I have called you by name, you are mine” had an impact on your life since this group last met?

To consider together

  • How far has the determined faith in Jesus that Wesley speaks of been true of the Church since the group last met?
  • Looking at your agenda, as a group pray together: “Lord Jesus ... on thee [we] will trust, and rest, and venture” ourselves.

As we continue

To consider alone

  • Can you notice any areas where you feel uncertain or afraid?
  • Imagine yourself saying to Jesus: “I have nowhere else to go. I will not stir from thy door.” How does Jesus respond?

To consider together

  • In groups of two or three, choose an item on the agenda to pray for, trusting and resting the work involved on Jesus.

As we finish

To consider alone

  • What concerns or worries from this meeting do you need to trust and rest on Jesus? Take a minute to tell him about them now.

To consider together

  • Return to the words from Wesley at the beginning of the meeting. If possible, pray them together, or have the leader read them slowly for the whole group.
