How do I pray for other people to know Jesus’ love?

God desires loving relationship with all people and is always working towards that goal.

God is the primary evangelist drawing people into this relationship, but we get to partner with God in God’s mission.

Prayer is one of the ways we join in with the work of the Holy Spirit in making God’s love known. We share our heart for other people with God, knowing that God hears every prayer we make.

Being rooted in prayer also helps us to open our own hearts to God, deepening our faith in God as we walk alongside those coming to know Jesus for the first time.

We might pray for:

  • A person's general health, wellbeing and fulfilment – that they might live life to the full, which includes knowing Jesus.
  • That their heart and mind to be open to the ways God is already reaching out to them.
  • Your own openness and courage to notice opportunities for sharing faith with other people.
  • That you and other followers of Jesus will live in a way that reveals his love to the person you are praying for.

Here are some creative ideas for how to pray for other people to know Jesus’s love.

  • If you keep a journal or diary, make a brief note of meaningful conversations you have with people. Whenever you re-read it, pray for that person.
  • Pray each morning and ask God to provide an opportunity to talk deeply to someone this day.
  • Download an app for daily prayer, such as Pray As You Go, in which you can add the names of people you would like to pray for.
  • Tie a piece of string around your wrist with three knots on it, each one for a different person who you're praying to know Jesus. Each time you notice the string throughout the day, touch the knots and briefly pray for that person.
