God is present, surrounding us at all times. But God is invisible. So how can you notice God?

Each of the 12 activities of A Methodist Way of Life are ‘thin places’ where we are perhaps more likely to notice God. So, whenever you practice one of them, pay attention!

God often communicates in whispers, not shouts.

Subtle transmissions. A deep sense of “yes.” A feeling you can’t quite name. These are some of the ways people have recognised God speaking to them on their way:

  • a rush of emotion
  • a deep inner silence or peace
  • unexpected clarity
  • a sense of connection to other people, nature, the universe itself
  • a flicker of excitement
  • hearing the same message from several different sources
  • a strong sense that the way ahead has already been prepared – like following breadcrumbs
  • a song, painting, or phrase that won’t let go
  • coincidences that feel too meaningful to ignore
  • conversations that go deeper than usual
  • encounters with animals that help us notice God’s presence in creation.
  • moments of heart-stopping beauty.

Ignatian daily examen

You might want to try this ancient technique of spending time at the end of each day, following a simple process.

  • Invite the Holy Spirit to guide your time of reflection.
  • Review the day with gratitude.
  • Pay attention to your emotions.
  • Choose one feature of the day and pray from it.
  • Look toward tomorrow, following a simple process.
