A rhythm for life

Because this journey lasts a lifetime, it needs a rhythm that fits real life. Methodists have always spoken about discipleship as a method: a way of shaping everyday life so faith has room to grow. That happens through simple practices woven into daily, weekly and seasonal rhythms.

  • Daily practices might include prayer, reading the Bible, noticing God at work around you, and choosing to live with kindness, courage and integrity.
  • Weekly practices often involve gathering for worship, meeting with others, sharing faith, asking questions and encouraging one another.
  • Yearly or occasional practices might include reviewing your discipleship journey, marking milestones, retreat or pilgrimage.

Travelling companions

Faith grows through conversation, listening, encouragement and honest questions. We often discover more about God, and ourselves, when we travel alongside others. Sharing the journey can look different for different people and circumstances. What matters is the gift of connection: knowing that faith is shaped and sustained as we learn, notice and respond together.

Discipleship happens in different kinds of spaces, and all of them matter.

  • Personal space includes time alone with God: prayer, Bible reading, reflection, rest or creativity.
  • Small groups are places of trust and honesty, such as class meetings, study groups or discipleship groups.
  • Larger gatherings, especially worship, remind us that we belong to something wider; a diverse people shaped by God’s love.

Your home station and growth station

A Methodist Way of Life describes journey through twelve ‘stations’ – twelve ways of meeting God and growing. No one does all of them all the time, and no one does them perfectly. What matters is staying on the journey.

Your home station is where you feel most yourself. It may be a practice that energises you, brings joy, or helps you notice God’s presence most clearly. This is often where your gifts are most visible.

Your growth station is the place that stretches you. It might feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable, but it’s often where God invites you to change and grow in new ways.
