It’s a win-win situation.
Following Jesus means serving others—but it’s not one-way. When we serve, we also open ourselves to being served in return. Serving is a relationship where we give and receive, and it can bring healing and joy to both sides. It helps us grow in kindness, humility, and connection. This last week, we’ll think about how serving isn’t just a task. It’s good for our souls, too. Whether it’s a small act or a big commitment, serving others draws us closer to God and each other.
Mini-adventures
Pick one of these challenges to try out this week. As you do it, pay attention to the ways in which God might show up.
- Offer to help someone this week with a simple act of service: cook a meal, run an errand, or lend a listening ear.
- Pray at the start of each day: “Holy Spirit, show me one person I can serve today.” Then notice what happens.
Get talking
Serving flows from the gift of the Holy Spirit. After the resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples, breathed on them, and sent them out to continue his work.
John 20:19–22 - Jesus breathes on his disciples and sends them
- What do you notice about how Jesus greets his disciples in this passage?
- Why do you think he breathes on them? What does that say about the Holy Spirit?
- How does the Spirit prepare and equip us to serve others?
- How might God be inviting you to respond to this passage?

Get deeper
Christians are called to joining in God’s mission in the power of the Holy Spirit. When we serve, we take part in that mission, helping to share God’s love, and make glimpses of God’s Kingdom visible in the world.
- Staying close to God helps our mission. What daily or weekly habit keeps you grounded in God?
- Mission includes noticing and caring. What have you seen recently in your community that needs care, and how could you respond?
- Which of these twelve aspects of being a follower of Jesus is most important for you to focus on this year?
Prayer
Loving God,
You are the Father who runs to meet us,
the Mother who embraces us with open arms.
Thank you for your boundless love and forgiveness,
even when we wander far from you.
Holy Spirit, guide us home.
Help us to return to you with open hearts,
and to celebrate when others do the same.
Teach us to love without judgment,
to forgive as we have been forgiven,
and to welcome all into your grace.
May we reflect your mercy in our lives,
and share the joy of your reign with everyone we meet.
In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
