Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.
1 Peter 3:15–16Evangelism. The ‘E-word’ can carry a lot of baggage – for some it brings excitement and purpose; for others discomfort or uncertainty. However you feel about it, sharing our faith is at the heart of participating in God’s life-changing work.
The Methodist Church does not exist for its own sake. We exist to make more followers of Jesus Christ. We are called outwards – towards our neighbours, into our communities – to meet new people and journey with them into faith.
What is evangelism?
Evangelism literally means sharing good news. And each of us shares good news in our own way. Jesus asks all of us to “make disciples” and we’re each gifted to do that differently. We share our faith by speaking and listening, through our actions and in the ways our lives point to God.
You don’t need all the answers. You don’t need to be someone else. You just need to be yourself in Christ, and trust that the most ordinary moments can help others find good news.
Three important commitments will help us to share our faith as individuals and churches:
- Be people who talk honestly, openly and vulnerably about our lives and our faith – with people inside and outside of our churches. We call this ‘real talk’.
- Build meaningful relationships with people outside of our churches. The Methodist Day of Outreach and other local festivals and events are great ways to do this.
- Be invitational. Offer newcomer-friendly services and events that help people to explore faith for the first time, such as the On the Way course.
