David Furnival
David Furnival was based in Sri Lanka between 2008 - 2013. He worked as a social worker in the Eastern Region in an area badly affected by conflict. David was based in Mutur, a small town in the Trincomalee district and scene of the infamous 2006 'Trincomalee massacre' in which 17 local NGO workers were killed.
Under the checkpoint's watchful presence, I turn towards the town. Brightly colour-washed tsunami houses proudly line the new road rising under my feet. The engineering activity quickly runs on past fields of broken foundations and abandoned toilet blocks. Work on them stopped under bombardment.
