Gospel Table, is a visionary initiative rooted in radical inclusivity, hospitality, and spiritual exploration. Emerging from Truro Methodist Church, Gospel Table seeks to create flexible, welcoming spaces—both physical and metaphorical—where individuals can gather, share stories, and encounter grace. It prioritizes “space over place,” allowing for dynamic, Spirit-led expressions of community that transcend traditional church structures.
The initiative was born out of reflections during the COVID-19 pandemic and the divisive Brexit period, which highlighted societal fragmentation. In response, the Gospel Table aims to dismantle barriers—be they social, economic, or cultural—and foster unity through shared experiences. It emphasizes listening over speaking, creating sanctuaries of empathy and transformation.
Led by the Revd Mark Dunn-Wilson and supported by a development pastor, David Crocker, the Gospel Table has received financial backing from the local church, circuit, and district. It has engaged with community groups such as Cornwall MIND and parenting networks, and aligns with the Kemeneth Project, a community hub initiative. The team has tested various expressions of the Gospel Table, including Folk Church in pubs, Toddle Café, and community food events, with plans to launch a mobile CommuniTEA and Coffee Van to reach parks, schools, and festivals.
Faith development is nurtured through sacramental gatherings that emphasize inclusion and encounter. Gospel Table values community over congregation and seeks to grow organically, allowing discipleship to emerge naturally. Evaluation will include both hard metrics (e.g., number of groups and encounters) and soft metrics (e.g., storytelling and impact narratives).
Sustainability is approached through a five-year funding plan, with the expectation that successful communities will be resourced and embedded into the circuit’s mission. The Gospel Table’s principles—grace, flexibility, listening, and inclusivity—are designed to be replicable in other contexts, encouraging wider church engagement.
Safeguarding is a priority, with a comprehensive policy tailored to the multi-site, multi-age, and multi-activity nature of the project. The Gospel Table is committed to creating safe, inclusive environments for all participants.
In essence, the Gospel Table is a pioneering model of church that reimagines community, faith, and mission, offering a transformative space where everyone is welcome and grace abounds.
