When the Light Lines Up
What you need (already set up at the front):
- a lamp or bright torch (Sun)
- a large ball (Earth)
- a smaller ball (Moon)
Opening wonder (30 seconds)
Say: “I am going to ask a couple of questions. If your answer is ‘yes’, respond by swaying your body side to side or wave.”
- Have you ever ever looked up at the sky and felt small?
- Have you ever looked up at the sky and felt amazed?
- Have you ever looked up at the sky and thought ‘What is out there?’
“Today we’re going to explore something that amazes people of all ages – an eclipse.”
Introducing the objects (45 seconds)
Hold up each object clearly as you say:
“This lamp is the Sun – it stays mostly in one place.”
“This big ball is the Earth – that’s where we live.”
“And this smaller ball is the Moon – it travels around the Earth.”
(Invite a child and an adult to help hold Earth and Moon if possible.)
Ask: Which one do you think moves the most?
Solar eclipse demonstration (1½ minutes)
Action:
- Turn the lamp on.
- Slowly move the Moon between the Sun and the Earth.
Say: “Sometimes, the Moon moves right in front of the Sun.” (Pause as the shadow appears.) This is called a solar eclipse.
Ask the congregation/group: “What do you notice?” (Let a few answers come.)
“The Sun hasn’t disappeared. It’s still there – but the Moon is blocking the light.”
Ask: “Does everyone on Earth see the eclipse at the same time?”
Explain simply: Only the places in the Moon’s shadow see it go dark.
Lunar eclipse demonstration (1 minute)
Action: Move the Earth between the Sun and the Moon.
Say: “Now something different can happen. The Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon.” (Pause.) “This is called a lunar eclipse.”
Ask: “What’s blocking the light this time? The Earth is blocking the Sun’s light from reaching the Moon.”
Optional line: That’s why the Moon can look dark – or even red.
The big question (45 seconds)
Ask with curiosity: “The Moon goes around the Earth every month… so why don’t we get eclipses every month?”
Action: Tilt the Moon’s path slightly up and down.
Say: “Because the Moon’s path is slightly tilted. Most of the time, the shadows miss. An eclipse only happens when everything lines up just right.”
Reflection and meaning (1 minute)
Say slowly: “Eclipses remind us of something important. When light disappears, it hasn’t gone. It’s just hidden – for a moment.”
Faith connection: “In the Bible, light is part of creation from the very beginning. And eclipses remind us that even when things seem dark, the light is still there.”
Ask one final question: “Where do you notice light returning after darkness in your own life?” (Pause. Let it sit.)
Closing line (15 seconds)
Say: “The universe works through movement, timing and balance. And we are part of that story – wondering, learning and watching together.”
