Methodist Church Hong Kong

The Methodist Church Hong Kong continues to integrate faith with service, guided by Wesleyan principles and strong lay leadership.

It operates 25 churches across four circuits, supported by a diverse team of ministers, deacons, missionaries, and parish workers. Education remains a core mission, with 32 schools serving over 17,000 students, alongside kindergartens and nurseries.

The church also runs five social service agencies, two dental clinics, and three camps, offering holistic care to the community.

Ecumenism is a key priority. The church plays a leading role in Hong Kong’s inter-denominational bodies and maintains active ties with global Methodist and Chinese Christian networks. Internationally, it supports ministries in Macau, Mainland China, England, and among migrant communities in Hong Kong and Macau.

In response to urban development, the church is expanding into new towns, combining evangelism with community outreach.

The Church regularly publishes a newsletter which can be accessed online.

The Methodist Church in Hong Kong traces its origins to 1851, when George Piercy arrived from England to evangelize the Chinese.

Early missionary work extended to Guangzhou, laying foundations for Methodism in South China.

In 1882, eleven Methodists from Guangzhou and Foshan requested church establishment in Hong Kong, marking the beginning of local Methodist presence.

The church grew steadily, with congregations moving across districts and establishing permanent sites, culminating in the completion of the Hong Kong Church in 1936. The English Methodist Church was founded separately in 1893.

Following the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Hong Kong’s unique political context led to independent development.

The 1950s and 60s saw a surge in refugees, prompting Methodists to expand pastoral care, education, and social services.

In 1975, the British-affiliated Chinese Methodist Church and the American-affiliated Methodist Church united to form The Methodist Church, Hong Kong—a self-governing, self-supporting, and self-propagating church incorporated by private ordinance. The English Methodist Church joined in 1988, affirming a shared commitment to unity and mission.
