Gereja Methodist Indonesia (The Methodist Church in Indonesia)
The Methodist Church in Indonesia (GMI) seeks to become a growing Church to bless all of God’s creation, growing and developing spiritually based on God’s word.
The GMI has six areas of focus for its ministry:
Mission and Evangelism- reaching new areas
Discipleship and Leadership - growth in the quality of the congregation
Young Generation Ministry – in a context where more than 50% of the population is below 30 years old
Ministry to the Poor and Marginalised – particularly responding to the needs for quality education and healthcare
Natural Disasters – sitting on the Ring of Fire Indonesia is geographically vulnerable. The GMI seeks to respond in service through its involvement in social service provision
The Methodist Church in Indonesia (GMI) was started by the Methodist Mission of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1905 and became part of the South East Asia Conference together with Singapore and Malaysia.
Over the decades, the church grew steadily and became autonomous in 1964, establishing its own leadership and governance.
From its base in North Sumatra, GMI expanded across Indonesia, particularly into Java, and now operates through three regions.
The church has embraced Indonesia’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity, conducting worship in Indonesian, Chinese, and English among others.
