Methodism in Nicaragua began in 1984 with two independent congregations inspired by outreach from the Evangelical Methodist Church in Costa Rica.
Initially the church sought support from the United Methodist Church, but subsequently pursued legal recognition independently, which they achieved in 1996.
Over the next decade, the church grew slowly. From the beginning, the church has been deeply engaged in social outreach—feeding children, offering free healthcare, and responding to natural disasters with aid and spiritual care.
In the past, the Methodist Churchy in Britain has sent mission partners to serve the church as teachers at a Methodist School.
