Regular collection of Methodist statistics began in 1766, when membership numbers were reported for the first time. The present system of annual data collection and statistical reporting is known as Statistics for Mission and dates back to 2002.
Statistics can never tell the whole story of the Church's mission and ministry, and its limitations have always been recognised. Nevertheless, as the 2011 Conference report put it, statistics enable us to 'find out something about what we are, who we are, where we are, how we have changed and are changing, and, to a certain extent, what we are doing'.
Statistics Update - December 2025
There has been unexpected complications to finalising the work on the new system and as we are keen to launch a system that is fit-for-purpose, the launch date will be delayed. The launch date will be confirmed in February 2026 and another communication will be sent out at that time.
We had hoped that this year’s Statistics for Mission could be entered in the new system but with the delays, we have decided to use the old system for this year. The old system has been configured so that information from the October count can be entered in. Click here to enter in your stats. The deadline for entering the information is Monday, 16 February 2026. We apologise for the shorter than normal notice for this.
NOTE - We are aware that some closed churches have reappeared under Statistics for Mission due to a syncing error with the system. If there are closed churches that have reappeared, please fill this is form and it will be processed in the new year.
We have also made TMCP aware of the position and they recognise that some Managing Trustees may have experienced difficulties in confirming various contact details, held on the Online Suite, as part of Check 4 of the 2025 Data protection Checklist. Those Managing Trustees are advised to wait until the launch of the new Online Suite and then check the contact details as soon as possible. If Managing Trustees have confirmed that all other information held locally is correct, as well as that held with TMCP, then they may mark off Check 4 as being completed.
