Young Adult Mission Placement Scheme (YAMPS)

Empowering young adults to explore faith, grow skills and serve communities.

Our Young Adult Mission Placement Scheme offers funded placements in partnership with churches and organisations.

What is the Young Adult Mission Placement Scheme?

The Young Adult Mission Placement Scheme (YAMPS) is a national programme of the Methodist Church offering paid, short-term placements for young adults aged 18–30.

What makes YAMPS unique is that placements are co-designed by host churches with young adults. This ensures opportunities are both relevant and exciting for participants and meaningful for local communities.

Why it matters

The Methodist Church is called to be growing, inclusive, evangelistic, and justice-seeking. YAMPS helps us live out this calling by:

  • Empowering young adults to explore faith and vocation in real contexts.
  • Supporting churches and organisations to experiment with fresh expressions of mission.
  • Building bridges between communities, generations, and the wider church.

Who can get involved?

  • Hosts – churches, circuits, and organisations can apply for funding to create placements in partnership with young adults.
  • Young Adults – explore placements advertised by hosts, gain skills, receive mentoring, and explore your sense of calling.
  • Mentors – walk alongside young adults as they reflect on their placement experiences.

How it works

Placements are flexible — from short tasters to immersive, full-time roles — meaning a wide range of opportunities can be created.

Young Adult Mission Placement Scheme – FAQs

Who creates placements?

Placements are created by local churches, circuits, or organisations who apply for funding. Each role is designed in partnership with a young adult before being submitted for approval.

Who can take part?

Once placements are approved and advertised, any young adult aged 18–30 can apply through the host’s recruitment process. Placements are designed to be accessible to all Young Adults including those with disabilities, neurodiversity conditions, from minority groups or low income backgrounds.

How long do placements last?

Placements are flexible — some last just a few weeks, while others run for several months or up to a year. The length depends on the opportunity the host has developed.

What support do participants receive?

All participants are paid at least the National Living Wage hourly rate, matched with a mentor, and offered opportunities for training and reflection.

What’s the difference between a host and a mentor?
  • Hosts provide the placement and manage the day-to-day role.
  • Mentors walk alongside the young adult, offering reflective and pastoral support.
How do I get involved?
  • Hosts: Work with a young adult to design a placement and apply for funding.
  • Young Adults: Apply for placements once they are advertised by hosts.
  • Mentors: Volunteer to support a young adult during their placement.

Hear from those involved in Methodist Young Adult programmes

“My involvement with Methodist Young Adult programmes has kept my confidence levels up and built my communication skills.”

Youth Rep

“The role gives me opportunities to talk to my friends/colleagues about how I’m involved with the church which opens up conversations.”

Youth Rep

“What I've learnt is that leadership can look completely different. It can be about showing up, being honest, and choosing kindness when you could just as easily disengage. It's made me think more seriously about things like integrity and vulnerability not just as concepts but as actual ways of leading.”
