FRCO isn’t a new idea for Methodism but does involve deciding to do things differently.

It means recognising that what is important is not just what we do – it’s about how and why we do it.

At the heart of all community organising is the desire to see and name the challenges of ‘the world as it is’, yet to also hope for and work towards the world as God intended it to be.

Church communities are already seeking to do this through prayer, worship, witness, and service. FRCO helps us to be more intentional about finding out where God is at work in our churches and communities, and join in.

FRCO is grounded in who we are as a people of Christian faith; rooted and centered in God, in our practices of prayer and worship, and in the way we live out and share our faith as Methodist people.

FRCO is rooted in the same theological principles of A Justice-seeking Church alongside the core values of Church at the Margins and a Methodist Way of Life. These ways of working are all about:

  • Being with not for: We do things with others, not for or to
  • Humility in Community: We can’t do everything, so will discern what is ours to do
  • Self-awareness: We will recognise power imbalances in our world, communities, and church. We will use and share the resources and power we do have
  • Justice and Hope: We will name and challenge injustice, in ways that demonstrate our hope that God will and can bring justice, healing, and transformation
  • Prayer: All that we do is rooted in prayer: for justice and flourishing in our communities, and for ourselves, that God will guide and sustain us.
