The Methodist Inclusive Language Guide

Good, open, encouraging conversations, based on careful listening, are central to all positive relationships, including those within the Church.

As Christians, we need to have the courage for conversations that can sometimes be difficult, to recognise that we sometimes exclude people, to listen with humility, to repent of any hurtful language or imagery and to take care with how we listen and what we say, write or depict, in the Spirit of Christ.

Here, we offer ‘guides’ which may help you understand why some words, phrases or images are offensive to other people, so that you can avoid these. We all have our own ways of communicating and the key thing is to do so with respect and kindness.
