South East, Gibraltar Methodist Church

The Methodist Church has been present in Gibraltar since 1769.

In 2023, when the Revd Conrad Hicks took over as Superintendent Minister, there were just two members. He has been supported by circuit stewards, a second presbyter, based in Britain, and the South East District, of which Gibraltar is part.

Having listened to Methodists and ecumenical colleagues in Gibraltar, it was discerned that there was an ongoing need for a Methodist presence there and the small Circuit Leadership Team offered prayer, oversight, support, and discernment. Revd Hicks has engaged with former Methodists and those with no Methodist connection, talking to those who are specifically seeking a Free Church and those who are looking for an inclusive, welcoming and justice-seeking church. Some are seeking help understanding the Bible; some are seeking pastoral support; some are seeking a community of respect for those without homes or income.

The Superintendent has been present in the wider community, offering worship, Bible study, informal gatherings, and engaging in media opportunities and community events. Worship is held in the side-chapel of the Anglican Cathedral and new members have joined.

Attendees of the weekly Bible study value the safe space for discussing ideas and spiritual insights. Following confirmation and membership classes, the membership has risen from 2 to 11 within 20 months. There is greater potential for outreach when the Methodist Church regains access to its premises on Main Street, which includes a much-loved cafeteria and meeting rooms. The Superintendent has identified potential for Bouncy and Brick Church and a pizza club for all ages.

Impressed with Methodism’s commitment to social justice, this new community is comfortable inviting friends to Bible study or worship. The community will maintain its welcoming and inclusive nature, offering worship, discipleship growth, and respectful listening at the heart of Gibraltar.
