Why are they called ‘Reps’?
Because the role is about representing children and young people of the Methodist Church to the rest of the Church and beyond.
What age can I be a Rep?
Different positions have different age brackets. It is always best to check the current documents as to which roles need filling each year:
- Methodist Conference 18-23
- Agents of Change 16-23
- Global Church 18-23
- Digital 16-23
What do Reps do?
Each Rep will have a specific area that they focus on (e.g. digital work, Methodist Conference, Agents of Change etc) which may involve attending specific meetings/events. Alongside this specific focus there is general Rep work which is often about being part of consultations, attending meetings, visiting local youth groups or district youth events, speaking at District Synods, posting on the official Rep social media accounts, sharing what you are doing/learning as a Rep with young people across Britain and listening to what young Methodists are speaking out about. Alongside all that, Reps are part of the planning process for 3Generate and get involved at the 3Gen weekend in a whole variety of ways. The Rep team will get together for two residentials across the year and have monthly virtual meeting in between those times.
Is this a voluntary role? Are expenses covered?
Yes this is a voluntary role and all reasonable expenses are covered.
What happens at the Rep weekends?
There are two weekends where Reps get together these are a mixture of fun, worship, discussion, training and planning. The weekends help to equip you for your role as a Rep. Often the Reps have a voice into consultations, or the planning of 3Generate or have ideas for what they want to do. All these things (and more) are talked about, alongside eating and playing games!
Who is in charge of the Reps?
The Youth President and members of the Children, Youth and Family (CYF) team look after the Reps and are staff at the residential weekends.
Will I be supported?
Yes – the Reps are supported by the Youth President and CYF staff. Plus the Reps support each other!
What happens about missing school, work, uni?
You shouldn’t have to miss school or work. Any travel can be outside of school/uni hours. If you work, it is up to you to decide whether you want to take time off/rearrange shifts etc. Rep work can mostly be fitted around your other commitments.
Can I still be a Rep if I am introverted/shy?
Of course! Over the years there have been a number of Reps who were shy and quiet. Often being a Rep has helped people to grow in confidence and try new things, but you can contribute in your own way.
Do I have to be a member of the Methodist Church?
You will need to be a member of the Methodist Church to be a Rep to Methodist Conference.
Are meals/food included?
Yes- food is included at residential weekends and meetings that you may attend.
Can I live anywhere?
Yes! Reps live all over Britain.
How is travel booked?
If you need to travel somewhere for your Rep role we have a system in place where your ticket will be booked and paid for via a booking system, so you don’t have to pay any money.
How much time do I need to dedicate to this role?
That depends on which role. Some roles require specific time, for example attending Methodist Conference is a 5-day commitment. Other roles may have fewer meetings spread over the year. Alongside the specific role, there is general Rep work, this is very varied and could include such things as visiting youth groups, speaking at district meetings, involvement with the work of the CYF team, writing articles, interviews, making videos, posting on social media etc. You give as much time as you can. But you need to be realistic, if you are already really busy with no time to spare you will need to decide if this role is right for you.

Where will I have to go?
This depends on the role – there is more information about the roles on the application documents. Residential weekends are held at Cliff College.
What is the process for applying?
- Step 1. – Find out as much info as you can and read the application documents
- Step 2 – Fill in the application form.
- Step 3 – Attend a discernment conversation. This is an opportunity to chat to CYF staff, the Youth President and previous Reps so that we can find out a bit more about you and you can find out more about the role, to decide whether you will be put forward for election.
- Step 4 – If you are put forward for election, young people will vote for the Reps via the 3Gen app or website in November.

What do you need to be a Rep?
You need to have enthusiasm, be passionate about young people having a place in the Church, willing to get involved and meet new people.
